• Families and multigenerational groups: The minimum age for gorilla trekking is generally 15 years. Some multigenerational groups and older travellers prefer a slower pace, fewer early departures and accommodation with easier access.

We don't force you into a 7-day box. If you have 4 days, we focus on a fly-in gorilla experience. If you have 14, we can include the remote Kidepo Valley or the crater lakes of Ndali-Kasenda. We design the route based on realistic driving times; Ugandan roads can be unpredictable, and 200 km can mean approximately six hours of travel.

Expert Tip: Avoid "Checklist Fatigue". Where the available time and budget permit, we generally recommend at least two nights in each major park to actually see the wildlife rather than just the dashboard of your vehicle.

Gorilla and chimpanzee permits

Permit availability is the "anchor" of most custom safaris. We first check which sectors have permits for your dates, then match the accommodation and transport to the confirmed trekking sector. Where several sectors are available, we discuss the route, lodge options and terrain before securing the permit through the UWA booking system. Whether you want a standard 1-hour trek or the 4-hour Gorilla Habituation Experience, we handle the direct coordination.

Expert Tip: If Bwindi availability is limited, we also check Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Mgahinga offers a beautiful volcanic setting, but permit numbers are limited and trekking difficulty varies according to the gorillas’ location.

Activities beyond the primates

What does a custom Uganda safari cost?

A tailor-made safari is not automatically more expensive than a fixed package. Good route design can actually save you money by reducing unnecessary driving or duplicate airport transfers. A custom route can remove activities that do not interest you and direct more of the budget toward the experiences and accommodation you value.

Permit Costs in 2026 and 2027: As of July 2026, foreign non-resident permits cost US$800 for standard gorilla tracking, US$1,500 for gorilla habituation and US$250 for chimpanzee tracking in Kibale. From 1 January 2027, habituation increases to US$1,800 and Kibale chimpanzee tracking to US$300, while the standard gorilla permit remains US$800.

Lodging and Transport Drivers: Accommodation is quoted according to occupancy, meal plan, season and lodge category. A room sold for single occupancy can cost substantially more per person than the same room shared by two guests. Vehicle costs depend on distance, fuel consumption, vehicle type and group size, so we calculate these against the actual route rather than applying one daily figure to every safari.

• The Sector Mismatch: If you book a lodge in Buhoma but your permits are for Rushaga, you face a 3-hour drive at 4:00 AM. We aim to match your gorilla permits and accommodation within the same sector wherever possible. Any necessary sector transfer will be explained before booking.
• Kigali vs Entebbe: If you only want to see gorillas, Kigali is often more convenient (approximately 4-5 hours drive). If you want the full Uganda circuit, Entebbe is the logical start.
• Baggage on Flights: Domestic safari flights normally have restrictive baggage allowances and generally require soft-sided luggage. The applicable weight limit is confirmed against the selected airline and ticket before travel.

Can solo travellers book a private safari? Yes. Many solo travellers do exactly that. A private safari offers greater flexibility, more control over daily timing and easier adjustments for photography stops or rest periods.

Can a custom safari start in Kigali and end in Entebbe? Yes. This is a popular "Northbound" route that works well if you want to end with the Murchison Falls or a flight out of Entebbe.

Are gorilla permits refundable? No. UWA rules are strict, and gorilla permits are generally non-refundable once purchased. If something changes, we explain the rescheduling options available at that time, but these are controlled by UWA rather than by us.
