Day 1 – Arrival in Kigali – Scenic Drive to Volcanoes National Park
Your adventure begins as you arrive at Kigali International Airport, where you’ll be warmly welcomed by your professional safari guide. Leaving Rwanda’s vibrant capital behind, you’ll journey north through the country’s famous “Land of a Thousand Hills.” The scenic drive winds past neatly terraced hillsides, colourful villages, bustling local markets and rolling green countryside, with the majestic Virunga Volcanoes gradually rising on the horizon.
Depending on your arrival time, there may be opportunities to stop for photographs, browse local craft markets, or enjoy a cup of Rwanda’s renowned coffee before continuing towards Volcanoes National Park.
By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at your comfortable lodge near the park, perfectly positioned for tomorrow’s gorilla trekking adventure. After settling into your room, your guide will provide a detailed briefing about the trek, including what to expect, what to pack, and practical tips to help you make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Day 2 – Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park – Relaxation & Optional Kigali Sightseeing
Before sunrise, enjoy an early breakfast before making the short drive to Kinigi Park Headquarters, where you’ll meet your Rwanda Development Board ranger guides. You’ll be allocated to one of the habituated gorilla families, and your ranger will share information about the family dynamics, the trekking conditions, and safety guidelines. Trekking groups are kept small – usually a maximum of eight visitors per gorilla family – ensuring an intimate and respectful encounter.
Walking sticks are available at the briefing area should you wish to use one, before you begin your trek into the forest. The terrain varies from cultivated farmland at the park boundary to dense montane rainforest, stands of golden bamboo, and at higher elevations, giant lobelias and heathland. Along the way, your ranger will point out bird calls, forest flora, and signs of the gorillas – broken stems, fresh nests, dung and the distant calls of birds that inhabit these volcanic forests.
The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on where the gorilla family nested overnight. As you push through thick undergrowth and climb steep ridges, the anticipation builds.
Your first glimpse is often surprisingly quiet. A huge silverback sits feeding only a few metres away while youngsters wrestle through the undergrowth and mothers nurse their infants with complete indifference to your presence. For one unforgettable hour, you quietly observe their family life unfold – from playful youngsters tumbling through the vegetation to mothers gently caring for their infants while the silverback calmly watches over the group.
Return to the lodge in the afternoon to rest and reflect on this profoundly moving experience. Enjoy a leisurely lunch, perhaps a hot shower, and time to relax.
Note: Depending on your flight schedule the following day, Kigali sightseeing – including the Genocide Memorial – may be arranged either this evening or tomorrow morning. After trekking, many guests prefer to rest, so we recommend the morning option when possible.
Day 3 – Return to Kigali – International Departure
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast overlooking the Virunga foothills before beginning the drive back to Kigali. The return journey offers another opportunity to appreciate the stunning landscapes of Rwanda’s famous hills.
Depending on your departure time, there may be opportunities to visit local craft markets, coffee shops, or the Kigali Genocide Memorial if it wasn’t included previously. The memorial provides a moving and thoughtful account of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and offers insight into Rwanda’s remarkable journey of reconciliation and recovery.
Your guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport in good time for your onward flight, carrying with you the unforgettable memories of standing in the presence of mountain gorillas and the warm hospitality of Rwanda.

How difficult is gorilla trekking in Rwanda?
Trekking difficulty varies depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight. Some treks are relatively easy and last only 2–3 hours, while others involve steep climbs through thicker vegetation and may take 5–6 hours. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, and walking sticks are available to help with stability. Porters are also available to assist with carrying your daypack.
What should I pack?
We recommend sturdy waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support, long sleeves and trousers to protect against vegetation, a waterproof jacket, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), insect repellent, and a lightweight daypack for your camera, water, and snacks. Layers are important, as temperatures can vary significantly from the forest floor to higher elevations. Lightweight gardening gloves are recommended for gripping vegetation on muddy or steep sections of the trail.
What is the minimum age for gorilla trekking?
The minimum age is 15 years. This rule is enforced by the Rwanda Development Board to ensure both visitor safety and the welfare of the gorillas.
Can I fly into Kigali and out of Entebbe?
