Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda: The Ultimate Gorilla Trekking Destination

Volcanoes National Park in north-western Rwanda is where Dian Fossey came to study mountain gorillas — and where she was eventually buried among them. Today it is the most famous gorilla trekking destination in the world. Ten habituated gorilla families can be tracked here, and the infrastructure, guide quality, and access are some of the finest in any African national park.

The park covers 160 km² of the Virunga Massif — a chain of five volcanoes straddling Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC — at elevations up to 4,507m (Mt Karisimbi). The landscape is otherworldly: bamboo forest, open meadows, and mist-draped volcanic peaks. Dian Fossey’s Karisoke Research Centre, where she worked until her death in 1985, sits at 3,000m in the saddle between Karisimbi and Visoke.

• Musanze Caves — Underground lava tubes near Ruhengeri town, 20 minutes from the park. Impressive geological feature.

Best Months to Visit

• June–September — Driest period. Best hiking conditions. High season — book permits a minimum of 6–12 months ahead.
• December–February — Short dry season. Good trekking conditions, fewer crowds than mid-year.
• March–May — Heavy rains. Trails are very challenging. Gorilla trekking still operates but is strenuous.
• October–November — Short rains. Manageable but expect wet days.

Altitude and Climate

Trekking zones are at 2,500–3,200m. It is cool and frequently misty — temperatures range from 7°C to 18°C during the day. Rain can fall at any time. Mornings are typically clear before cloud builds in the afternoon. The highest peaks are significantly colder; proper mountaineering gear is needed for Karisimbi and Muhabura summits.

Drive Times

• From Kigali — 2–2.5 hours to Musanze (Ruhengeri) via the paved northern highway. Scenic drive past Lake Muhazi and through hill country.
• From Entebbe/Kampala via Cyanika border — 5–6 hours including border crossing. Feasible as a direct routing but long. Breaking the journey in Kabale or Kisoro is recommended.
• From Bwindi (Mgahinga side) — 2.5–3 hours via Kisoro and Cyanika border.
• Kigali International Airport — Rwanda has excellent air connections. Many safari travellers fly into Kigali, do Volcanoes, then cross into Uganda for Bwindi.

Rwanda Volcanoes NP gorilla trekking permits cost USD 1,500 per person — the most expensive gorilla permit in the world. The premium reflects Rwanda’s investment in high-value, low-impact tourism and the exceptional infrastructure. Permits must be booked through Rwanda Development Board (RDB) or authorised operators.
